William Henderson's Fleams

A folding three bladed equestrian blood letting fleam, (phleme). Brass scales with a horn inset, encasing three graduated blades, each stamped GREAVES CUT STEEL. English circa 1820. Substantial and well made, formerly the tool of William Henderson, at this time most likely a farrier, the veterinary profession not recognised until 1832 when both The English Veterinary College (London 1781) and another established in Edinburgh in 1832, were incorporated into the Royal College.
