A fine nineteenth century inkwell modelled as a bear seated on its haunches. The afterwork takes the form of profuse punchwork producing the effect of a thick and furry coat with just the bear’s muzzle, claws and eyes burnished bright. The opening is cleverly concealed within the design of the coat; the bear’s head lifting onto a gilt brass and glass reservoir for the ink.
Gilded bronze, Russian, circa 1880.
