William & Mary Pique-Work Tobacco Box

hover over image to zoom

A William & Mary period brass tobacco box with an inlaid oak base and attractive hinge. The lid is made of a panel of ivory with brass piqué work and there remains traces of red and black wax dots which would originally have enhanced the design.

The piquéwork is typically French, in this instance most likely made in the East End of London at one of the workshops of French Huguenots who fled there after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.

English circa 1700.

4 1/8 in x 3 ¼ in x 7/8 in
