A pair of paintings attributed to Henri Désiré van Blarenberghe (1734-1812); a winter landscape at dawn with peasants and a journeyman beginning their day, together with a view near Naples, travellers passing through a cave with an abandoned caryatid. Painted in gouache on vellum and within period gilt gesso frames.

Henri Désiré van Blarenberghe was from a dynasty of painters originally from French Flanders. The family’s first painter was Hendrick van Blarenberghe, (1646-1712) followed by his son, Jacques-Guillaume (1679-1742). Two of Jacques-Guillaume’s sons became painters, Louis-Nicolas and Henri Désiré, 1716-1794 and 1734-1812 respectively. Louis-Nicolas was particularly close to the French court and much of his work was as a campaign painter and war reporter. His two daughters were chambermaids to the children of the French kings.
