Zoomorphic Clasp-Knife

hover over image to zoom

A zoomorphic clasp-knife dating from the 18th century; the steel blade stamped with maker's marks, set without a spring between horn scales shaped into the form of a horse's head.

Perhaps French, mid 18th century.

The scales appear to be formed from a single piece of thick horn rendered pliable and folded, then held in place with three rivets of steel through brass rings.

Considerably worn from several lives of use resulting in a beautiful all-over state and patina.

open length 8.5 inches.
