From 1751 the 21st Fusiliers Regiment of Foot, was known as The Royal North British. In 1877, (a possible date for this folksy and charming artwork), they were renamed the Royal Scots Fusiliers and in 1901, they adopted tartan trews.

It seems they were able to recruit men of varying heights in order to fit around the regimental colours; the officers with the shortest legs being issued with the tartan trews.

Within the original bird's eye maple frame.
