His Majesty's Yacht Britannia was ordered in 1892, designed by George Lennox Watson and built by D&W Henderson in Partick on the River Clyde.
She was a gaff-rigged cutter built for RYS Commodore Albert Edward, Prince of Wales and served both Edward and his son King George V with a long racing career.
This is a fine and rare picture of Britannia in woolwork, depicted through open curtains edged with gold wire fringing and decorated with sequins. Seen on the deck are cut-out card figures including that of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. The sea has been skilfully enlivened by pulling through and fraying tufts of white wool.
Within a finely grained bird’s eye maple frame of the period. English circa 1895.
