A Wool-Work Vase of Flowers

hover over image to zoom

A wool-work picture of summer flowers arranged in a pedestal vase surrounded by a curtain pelmet. Within a busily grained maple veneered frame of the period.

English circa 1880.

Soldiers of the British Army learnt the skills of needlework from their naval counterparts as marines when on voyages to their postings, very often India. They developed their own style and subject matter and the flower motif is typical. The other often encountered design is of regimental battle ensigns.
