William IV Trick Snuff Box

hover over image to zoom

Rectangular, made of Nickel or German Silver, engraved the same top and bottom with a chequer-board design and all round with a pattern of simulated, false hinges and studded with four small bosses to cover the pivot pins and further confuse.

The mechanism of the masked lid is on a hinged pivot about 1/2 inch away from a drop down hinged flange that forms a false end to the box. When the lid is closed and the flange replaced, the means of opening is almost imperceptible.

A similar example is recorded in silver by the silversmith Edward Edwards, London 1831.

The quality of this snuff box leaves open the possibility that it too was made by Edward Edwards.
