A pressed tortoiseshell pocket box, signed in initial, P.W, (for Peter Wyon) beneath the subject's shoulder, Wellington depicted medal-like and as a victorious Roman Emperor . Surrounding Wellington's profile is the legend DUX WELLINGTONIENSIS HEROS BRITTANICUS.
Peter Wyon was an engraver and die sinker from a family with a long tradition engraving dyes. He worked for Matthew Boulton and was associated with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.
A fine quality box in excellent condition. English circa 1815.
