Wedgwood Black Basalt portrait medallion of Admiral Lord Nelson.

Within a pressed brass, gold-lacquered frame period to the portrait, circa 1798.

The basalt 3 ¼ inches x 4 inches.

One of several medallions produced by the factory in 1798 as a series that included Admirals Howe, St Vincent and Duncan, the factory sculptor, John de Vaere depicts Nelson wearing full-dress uniform, the St Vincent medal and Order of the Bath. Having distinguished himself at the Battle of Cape St.Vincent in 1797, Nelson went on to lose his arm and the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, evidenced by the empty right-side sleeve of his tunic in this portrait.
