Vernis Martin Billet Doux Holder

hover over image to zoom

A charming, French, billet doux case (sweet note case) in Vernis Martin. Gold coloured lacquer over a guilloche base painted with roses and tulips, perhaps a pansy at either end, (symbolic of pense et moi; a literary reflection or thought). The Vernis Martin over a wooden cylinder, the two parts, one with an edge finished with a band of engraved silver, the other similar of gold, united by a sleeve of tortoiseshell. A red rose symbolic of enduring passion; a red tulip of true love. Cases such as these were used to pass love notes and invitations of a romantic nature during the 18th century.

French, circa 1770. Fine and bright, near perfect condition.

5.25 inches long.
