A view of Saint Mark's Square, Venice, spontaneously painted in oil on a thin sheet of wood by Hans Trier around 1900 and within a period gilt gesso frame. Signed in red lower right.

Henry Trier was born in London in 1877 and began training as an artist when around 20 years of age. He travelled extensively around the Mediterranean making long stays in Spain.Trier showed for the first time at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1901, the same year he was elected to membership of the Society of British Artists. Hans Trier is recorded as exhibiting on three occasions at the R.A; in 1911 'The Mill Bridge Avila, Spain. 1913 Palais des Papes, Avignon and in 1920, Piz Forno, Engadine.
