A fine nineteenth century whaler's walking cane, the shaft fashioned from a cut section of whale's jaw bone, the lower section carved into a formal spiral inspired by a narwhal tusk, above this is a section cut with neat cross hatching.
An octagonal band inlaid with dots of black palm wood before a final octagonal section neatly carved with reeded lines. A plain octagonal carving leads to a flared octagonal 'capstan' handle inset with an elongated diamond of tortoiseshell joined to the shaft by a disc of baleen.
English/American circa 1860.
