Artist: Basil Nightingale.

A picture of the hunt, watercolour and pencil on brown paper, inscribed in pencil by the artist 'Tom Firr on Whitelegs, hounds Piety, Garnish, Speedy, Marigold and signed Basil Nightingale.

The artist was born at Maldon in Essex, in 1864. The youngest of ten children, he was trained as an artist by his father, Robert. Taking from Sally Mitchell, 'Basil is said to have worked at Melton Mowbray for some time and this is probably where he painted his famous picture of Tom Firr on Whitelegs'. Presumably this is a preparatory sketch for that same 'famous' work.

Prints of this picture have been sold at auction; Shouler & Son, Melton Mowbray, 2016 and again Golding Young & Mawer 2015).

This work in a period, perhaps original, gilded molding frame with a beaded sight edge.
