A large and substantial bronze sundial finely engraved all-over; above the gnomon with the arms of Hawley and their motto 'Et Suivez Moy', (follow me); and signed beneath the gnomon by the illustrious maker 'Thomas Heath, in The Strand, London'.

Thomas Heath was an esteemed London instrument maker working during the mid eighteenth century, at the Hercules & Globe, in the Strand, London from c.1721 and opposite Exeter Exchange, in the Strand, London from c.1742. He advertised on his trade cards and bill heads "Mathematical Instruments Contrived & Made in Metal, Ivory or Wood According to the Latest Observations of Philosophers and Practitioners of Mathematical Sets by Thos. Heath at the Hercules next the Fountain in ye Strand, London. With Books of their Use'.
