Thistle and Rose Carved Shell Snuff Box

A fine snuff box in the most desirable condition, the body made from a carved shell, the lid deeply worked with a foliate design of thistles and roses, running over at the front to form a thumb-piece, centred with a paste-set diamond shaped bloodstone.

The frame is of silver, hallmarked for Birmingham 1830, makers Joseph Taylor & John Perry. The interior of the box is fully lined with silver, gilt.

Joseph taylor (1767-1827) registered marks at the Birmingham Assay Office from 1773-1801 and was Guardian of the Assay Office in 1813. Recorded in Bisset's Magnificent directory as 'J.Taylor, Working Gold and Silversmith, Jeweller, Tortoiseshell Box, Gilt and General Toy Manufacturer, 35 Newhall Street Birmingham'. Taylor also had a showroom in London at Bouverie Street. Following his death in 1827, his brother, also John, and brother-in-law John Perry took over the business.
