Substantial Whaler's Cane

hover over image to zoom

A good, 19th century whaleman's walking cane, the single piece whalebone shaft has a handle carved from exotic palmwood, fashioned the same as the more familiar carved tooth found atop these canes.

The shaft is carved to reciprocate the octagonal stem of the handle and is then carved with a wrythen section before turning into the main carving of the cane which is reeded, very much the same as a table leg of this period, before returning to an octagonal carving, again to reciprocate the handle. Finally finished with the original patinated brass and iron ferrule.

English circa 1830.
