Steel Puzzle Box

hover over image to zoom

A fine little 18th century steel snuffbox with a deceptive opening.

The catch release button at the front is in effect false; to open this box the spring within the lid is retracted by pulling on the middle knuckle of the hinge.

Beautifully made, as is so often the case with these steel boxes, there is a fine dental edge to the lid and a great looking spring within; the body is tapered and finished with a line decoration that will offer some grip.

To note, the lid is smoother than the rest of the box and this may well indicate that a previously engraved owner’s name has been removed, albeit a long time ago.
