A Japanese Suiseki formed from a stalagmite and mounted onto a hardwood base; a two-character signature engraved into a tiny disc of shell beneath.
19th century. 8.25 inches high.
The tradition of suiseki comes from China and is similar to the Chinese Scholar's pieces. In Japan this begins during the reign of Empress Suiko, born in 554 and reigning from 593-628, when small objects were brought to Japan as gifts from the Chinese Imperial court.
