Sri Lankan Carved Ebony Box

A fine, solid ebony box, of a type used by Sri Lankan ladies to store jewellery and hair ornaments or made for sale to the colonial market.


Deeply carved all-over with a pattern of meandering leaves and flowers, (known in the region as 'flowering pineapple pattern), to the inside of the lid is a design of two monkeys and a flag.


The box retains the original lock and key. 


Sri Lanka circa 1850.
