A pair of early Sheffield Plate candlesticks produced at the works of Henry Tudor around 1760. With separate, loose bobech, one stick bearing the marks of the maker, a gothic T stamped to the base and nozzle.
Henry Tudor, with partners Thomas Leader and John Sherburn, founded the principal manufactory of plated ware in Sheffield at the beginning of the 1760’s. They had the largest output and the majority of surviving early specimens, i.e. before 1773 can, without doubt, be attributed to Tudor’s works.
The firm dominated the Sheffield scene from its beginnings until the turn of the eighteenth century going into a steep decline at the beginning of the 19th century being surpassed by the likes of Roberts & Cadman or Watson & Bradbury.
