Russian Painted Lacquer Box

hover over image to zoom

A fine painted lacquer box from Palekh, Russia, signed along the bottom edge and dated 1936.

From the beginning of the 17th century, Palekh was established as a centre for icon painting. Immediately following the October Revolution in 1917 and the suppression of Orthodox Christianity, the icon painters found themselves out of work. They thankfully turned their highly skilled hands to producing small works, and under the directorship of Alexander Bakushinsky of the Moscow Decorative Art Museum, the ‘Old Painting Artel’ was founded. From1924, examples of this new folk handicraft were sent to international exhibitions in both Italy and France, the subjects now traditional Russian fairy tales or sometimes simply Soviet and propagandist.
