A rare case of the Chinese copyist's art whereby it can be assumed that a Scottish mariner or supercargo has spontaneously commissioned one of the many Cantonese carvers to copy and interpret his ram's horn snuff mull. From the eighteenth and throughout the nineteenth century a huge Chinese Export Trade developed on the back of the export of Chinese porcelain and tea, supercargos mediating between the masters of skilled Chinese craftspeople and western merchants, the goods being despatched from the hongs of Canton.
