A portrait of a ratting terrier painted in oil on artists’ board and depicted in a stable, alert and ready for action. Unsigned although firmly attributed to Edwin Loder of Bath.

Within a period rosewood veneered frame. o.s:17 1/8 inches x 14 1/8 inches 

Edwin Loder (of Bath) was the son of James Loder. He enlisted in the 62nd Regiment of Foot in 1846 at the age of 19, serving mainly in India. 20 years later he was clapped-out and discharged as ‘unfit for further service’. He was made an out-pensioner of Royal Chelsea Hospital but returned to his home town of Bath, establishing a studio at Widcombe.The majority of his works are dated between 1850 and the year of his death, around 1885.
