A splendid eighteenth century reverse painted mezzotint, The studious Fair. Engraved by the Irishman Charles Spooner after the original work by Mary Benwell, (Mrs. Code). Published soon after 1760 in London for 'Heny. Parker opposite Birchin Lane in Cornhill & Robt. Sayer near Serjeants Inn Fleet Street'. Within a fine Georgian print frame with gilt and sanded slip, likely original to the work.

The subject of this picture is in fact Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen consort to King George III. She was the youngest daughter of Charles Louis of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and married her husband on the night of the 8th September 1761, the day that they met. Speaking no English, the first few years of her marriage were difficult for her but the couple formed a strong and affectionate bond. She had fifteen children and was mother of two future kings.
