Portrait of the Farrier George Cooke

Wonderful quality Georgian portrait, a typed label to the reverse identifying the sitter as 'George Cooke who was a farrier'. His clothes are clearly fine and his white stock has a fine stick pin decorated with a running white horse; a fob seal and watch key are suspended from a red ribbon at his waist.

 

Within an excellent Carlo Maratta frame decorated with a gesso leaf and shield scotia and a pin-centred carved ribbon.

The sitter is likely to be The George Cooke listed in 1817 as with the Worshipful Company of Farriers and as a 'Beadle'.

The son of our sitter married a Sophia Charlotte Whiteus, the granddaughter of Anne Stocks.
