Pierhead Portrait of the Brigantine Raven

hover over image to zoom

Artist: J. F. Loos

A portrait of the Brigantine 'Raven', a trading vessel built in 1875 for export by James Keefe of Prince Edward Island in the Gulf of St Lawrence in Canada. She was bought by J C Hoad of Rye in Sussex.

Depicted here in oil on canvas approaching Antwerp, perhaps on her first journey with J.C. Hoad. Loos' style much influenced by Weytz with the conventional deck details showing the ship's master surveying the coastline of Antwerp as they approach, the other crew members stretched out along the length of the deck. Unusually painted against a darkening sky throwing the Raven's sails into strong contrast.

Signed by the artist 'J. F. Loos, Antwerp', lower left, within a fine grained frame with gilt gesso sight, all circa 1870.
