Artist: Ward after Paye

A mezzotint engraving by William Ward after the painting by Richard Moreton Paye, published by J.R. Smith, London 1785. An excellent impression in a modern frame, mounted to the plate mark.

WILLIAM WARD (1766-1826). English mezzotint-engraver, was an elder brother of James Ward. Born in London in 1766, he was the most distinguished pupil of J. Raphael Smith, who published this print July 1st 1785. (Ward is credited with much of the work to the plates which bear the name of J.R. Smith.) In 1795 he began to exhibit in the Royal Academy, of which in 1814 he was elected an associate engraver . He also held the appointment of mezzotint-engraver to the Prince Regent and the Duke of York . He executed six plates after Reynolds, engraved many of the works of his brother-in-law, George Morland, and his mezzotints after Andrew Geddes, including the full-lengths of Sir David Wilkie and of Patrick Brydone, are highly regarded. He died in London on the 1st of December 1826 .

He died December 1821. Exhibited Royal Academy 1773-1802, Society of Artists 1783-91, Free Society 1783. Primarily a painter and sculptor.
