Exceptional, carved ivory profile portraits, attributed to Andrea Pozzi. Twelve philosophers of ancient Greece, their identities engraved beneath in Greek, within a deep wedge form frame veneered in rosewood.

The retailers label to the reverse inscribed in pen 'Edward Puckle, late', above the printed text for Colnaghi & Puckle of Cockspur Street, London.

In 1840 Martin Colnaghi joined with Edward Puckle to trade as Colnaghi and Puckle. By 1843 Martin Colnaghi was bankrupt; the business being passed to Puckle by 1845. This work assumed to be stock from the partnership sold immediately after the business had passed to Puckle.

The carver. Andrea Pozzi was the son of Giovanni Battista Pozzo (Pozzi). He worked for King Carlos III of Spain within his highly successful workshop at Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid, also working for the King of Naples and Sicily

The portraits circa 1780; retailed circa 1840.
