Perspective View of Rome by Jean Barbault

A good 18th century perspective print; Vue De La Place Navone a Rome. The original work by Jean Barbault, engraved by B.F. Leizelt. Excellent, sharp impression, with original gouache colouring, printed on laid paper. Condition very good. Some soft creasing and faint centre crease.

Sheet size: 12 3/4 in  x 16 7/8 in. Unframed.

The artist of this scene is Jean Barbault (1718–1762) a French painter, etcher and printmaker. Barbault worked in Rome for most of his life and is noted for paintings of local people wearing traditional costumes and for his work documenting iconic Roman monuments and ancient antiquities. 

The engraver is Balthasar Friedrich Leizelt (fl. 1760-1799) a German printmaker, active in Augsburg.

 

Condition: Good impression with wide margins. Minor overall creasing, one vertical crease to centre. Time toning and surface dirt built-up to edges of the sheet.
