Peiwar Kotul Cross of Wood

A cross formed from wood taken from the Peiwar Kotal Pass, the four ends capped with silver, three engraved; 'Dec. 2nd 1878, Peiwar and Kotul'.


On the 2nd December 1878 the 5th Gurkha Regiment stormed the Spin Gawai Kotal. Three Orders of Merit were won by the regiment following this action and Major John Cook was awarded the Victoria Cross. Provenance: Veronica, Dowagwer Countess of Lucan (1937-2017).


An important painting of this famous action by Vereker Hamilton is held at the National Army Museum, London.
