An early 19th century papier-mâché snuff box, the lid decorated with a scene after the work by Peter Paul Rubens depicting the twins, Castor and Pollux, carrying off the Daughters of Leucippus; Cupid, the god of desire and erotic love, looks on from behind the black horse. The decoration is heavily painted over a printed base, the interior finished red, in imitation of the tortoiseshell often found to line similar, more expensive snuff boxes of the period. German, circa 1830.
