Old Sheffield Plate water plate, with a crisply engraved crest at its centre of a goat's head erased beneath a banner with the motto 'Spare Nought', probably that of William Hay Esq.of Dunse Castle, Berwick.
English circa 1770.
8 inches diameter x 1 3/8 inches depth
Taking from Gordon Crosskey's work we learn that several works were producing fused plate water plates by the 1770's, but that most were produced at Soho, (Birmingham). They were dinner plates made with a second part of approximatley 1 inch depth that was to be filled with hot water in order to keep the food warm.
