Thomas Law (1717-1775) can be regarded as the father of the plated trade, (Fused Plate/Old Sheffield Plate). Elected Master Cutler in 1754, at the age of 36; amongst his apprentices there numbered no less than six who went on to become principals in the most important of the early plating partnerships. A pair of similar candlesticks are illustrated in Gordon Crosskey, Old Sheffield Plate, p.89 Figure 86, by Boulton & Fothergill c.1765, described as being 'large and expensive candlesticks.' (At the time of making).
