A mid 19th century oil painting by Alexander Christie a young girl, perhaps Norma, (the name on the book spine) in an interior with a red curtain.

 

Alexander Christie was a Scottish painter born in 1807.

He exhibited at the RA in 1853 (No.253) when resident at 20 Forth Street, Edinburgh, where he died in 1860. He also exhibited RSA (72), RHA (2). RA, BI. Elected to ARSA in 1848.

 

Painted in oil on artist's mill board laid onto a wooden panel, within a gilt gesso frame with shaped gilt-wood spandrel.

 

An exhibition label to the reverse identifying the artist and at the time when he was resident in Edinburgh.
