Mr. & Mrs. Fisher of Stroud

An interesting pair of portraits; Mr. Benjamin Fisher & Mrs Margaret Fisher (nee White). Painted in oil on canvas and within their original gilt gesso frames. 


Benjamin Fisher is recorded by the Stroud Local History Society as being born in 1740 and was to become a currier. His wife came from Newent, the daughter of a tanner.

To the stretcher of Benjamin's portrait is written the legend "B. Fisher Aug 2nd 1810 in the 71st year of his age rode from Stroud to Bristol and back again in one day on Horseback being a distance of about 64 miles St*****Business to the amount of 300£"


The canvas inscribed by the artist "Benj. Fisher Stroud in 70th year of his age. Thos Stewart pinxit".


Thomas Stewart, born October 1766. entered the RA Schools in 1782 where has awarded Silver Medal 1788. He exhibited at RA on 24 occassions between 1784 and 1801. He apparently stayed at George Stubbs' house around 1795-7 and painted his host's portrait.
