Located in Cumbria, Eskmeals was the site secured in 1897 by Barrow's Vickers, Sons and Maxim for firing rights.
Termed the Main Battery it was here that tests were conducted for range and accuracy; firing over the foreshore the medium to large naval guns built in Barrow. Previously, testing had been carried out by firing into a sand-filled butt!
These original photographs were taken as a record of the early tests results at the site.
