Midshpman's Sea Chest Snuff Box

hover over image to zoom

An eighteenth century novelty snuff box in the form of a midshipman's sea chest, made as the real thing from heavy, structural leather with pony skin panels. The lid attached to the base with a comb hinge centred with a silver metal cartouche engraved with the crest of a rampant demi dragon above the initials in script, J.S. and with a siver metal false lock and shaped thumb lift.

Stamped within and in block capital letters 'Gifford Edinburgh'. Gifford's are listed as 'leather box-makers' working from Cannongate Head until early in the nineteenth century.

A true counter-part to this seaman's chest is displayed at the National Maritime Museum Greenwich, their example by 'Bryant's Trunk and Bucket Warehouse' circa 1805.
