Mezzotint of Lady Elizabeth Keppel

hover over image to zoom

A fine mezzotint by Edward Fisher after the work by Sir Joshua Reynolds, published proof before title circa 1760 and within a late 19th century Hogarth type frame.

Reynold's 'sitter-book' records eight appointments with Lady Keppel and two independent sittings with the second lady in this work, assumed to be her servant and identified simply as 'negro'. They decorate the statue of Hymen, god of marriage, probably referencing Keppel's recent role as bridesmaid at the wedding of George III and Queen Charlotte.
