Mariner's Tot Ladle

hover over image to zoom

A George III tot ladle, perhaps used by the officers onboard a ship-of-the-line, the bowl made from a cut tropical nut with a shaped silver-coloured metal rim, the long handle made from twisted baleen, the original 'whalebone', with a heart-shaped fixing to the bowl. English circa 1780.

The Royal Navy tradition of the issuing of a daily ration of rum, (daily tot), was developed throughout the 18th century, initially being a substitute for the allowance of one gallon of small beer, which simply took up too much space onboard ship. The custom was finally abolished on Black Tot Day, 31st July 1970, around 200 years after this little dipper was made.
