Rare Georgian snuff box made from repurposed engraved copper printers plate, presumably for the surgeon named in the engraving; 'Davis Surgeon & Man Midwife Bicester Oxfordshire’. The image of the pestle and mortar surrounded by the names of herbs etc. provided by Thomas Davis; Lavender; Castor Drops; Salvolatile; Harts Horn; Opodeldock.
This Thomas Davis (1736- 1812) was the father of Thomas who became a ‘Royal’ surgeon to King William IV. He is listed in the records at Windsor as ‘Surgeon Extraordinary’ which means that he was one of a team of medics attending the monarch.
