Lead Fire Mark for Westminster insurance Company

A Georgian fire insurance mark of the Westminster insurance company, depicting a portcullis and Prince of Wales feathers and the policy number '52585'. Lead with gilt behind the portcullis and in-fill to the numbers.

Nicholas Barbon established the first Fire Office to insure property against fire in 1680. By the end of the century one in ten houses were insured within the City of London. By 1717 there were four companies operating and employing Thames Watermen as part time fire fighters. They wore uniforms and with copper badges and carried hooks, axes and crow bars.
