In the Census of 1881, John Simpson was living and working in his birthplace of Wakefield, West Riding, in Yorkshire. His occupation was that of a Boot Maker; on his snuff box he refers to himself as a 'Last Maker'.
He was born in 1821, married a girl from Grantham called Elizabeth and together they had one daughter named Sophia. The same Census discloses that in order to make ends meet they took in three lodgers, all male and all cleaners on the local railways.
John’s snuff box, neither humble nor boastful, is professionally made and engraved, probably serving him well for all of his working life.
