Artist: Frank Samuel Eastman
Pair of Portraits; Rev. & Mrs. Fisher painted by Frank Samuel Eastman, signed and dated 1916, within period gilt gesso moulding frames.
Their son, Geoffrey Fisher, became Archbishop of Canterbury. His son Henry (eldest of 6), became president of Wolfson College, Oxford. These portraits used to hang in the dining room at Lambeth Palace.
Eastman, was born in Croydon and studied at the Croydon School of Art; he completed his studies at the Royal Academy Schools and went on to exhibit 35 works at the Royal Academy between 1902 and 1949.
The hands of both sitters are beautifully painted and the viewer feels confident of knowing the character of his subjects.
Eastman lived and worked at Sydenham in South East London and also spent time in Leamington Spa.
