hover over image to zoom

Four engravings from the set 'Ventiquattro isole della laguna', engraved by the Bellunese printmaker Antonio Sandi after the works by Francesco Tironi, published by Ludovico Furlanetto early in the 1780’s. Wonderful, inky black impressions depicting busy waterways before the beautiful old churches and villas in the waters around Venice.

Within excellent hand made and finished copies of frames period to the engravings. o.s: 19 in x 14.75 in

Although working amongst the greats of eighteenth century Venice, little is known about the life of Francesco Tironi. He is best known today for his drawn views of the islands of the Venetian lagoon, from which these four engravings by Antonio Sandi are taken. His compositional style owes so much to Canaletto that it has been suggested he may have worked in Canaletto’s studio, whereas his figures, as can be seen in these prints, owe more to Fransceso Guardi.
