A portrait of Charlotte Hagard, wife of John Manning Esq, painted in 1781 by Richard Livesay, 'a pupil of Hogarth'. Oil on canvas and within the original gilt-wood sunburst spandrel with outer gilt-gesso moulding frame.

Richard Livesay was born in 1753 and entered the RA Schools in 1774 as a draughtsman. He lived in the house of Hogarth's widow between 1777 and 1785 making copies of Hogarth's work and producing engravings of his works. He was later to become a pupil of Benjamin West and then his assistant. He taught drawing to the children of the Royal Family and exhibited extensively at the RA between 1776 and 1821 (69). From 1796 he was drawing master at the Royal Naval College, Portsea, where he died in 1826.
