Islay, Tilco, and a Macaw. An Inkstand after Landseer

A Victorian desk inkstand, the design after the famous painting by Sir Edwin Landser; Isaly, Tilco and a Macaw, the painting commissioned by Queen Victoria and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840.

 

The inkstand of gilded brass, the feeding cups serving as candle sockets, the two dogs, Islay, a Skye terrier and Tilco a Sussex spaniel, of cast bronze silvered, as is the Macaw. Each serve a purpose on the inkstand. Skye is the inkstand, Tilco contains a shallow dish, most likely for alternative nibs, and the Macaw is for tapers, (to melt the sealing wax). 

 

12.5 inches high x 9 inch diameter.
