Independence Day Hook Rug

hover over image to zoom

American hook rug dated to 1876 and made to celebrate American Independence.

Rug hooking is perhaps unique to North America, the tradition arising from a need to cover the cold bare floors of pioneer homes. Weaving cloth required long hours at the spinning wheel and loom whereas these rugs could be readily made from scraps of fabrics pulled through a sacking base to produce warm floor-coverings to brighten the home.

American circa 1876.

Within a period bird's-eye maple frame with a gilt spandrel.
