A rare 18th century snuff box made in the form of a hurdy gurdy, the brass decorated in an aubergine-coloured lacquer with traces of gilt decoration and applied with gold coloured metal components and embellishments which are finely engraved with flowers and leaves. The box opens onto a gilded interior, the lid with further gilt decoration and a glass covered frame presumably for a lock of hair or portrait miniature. A hole at the opening end tells of the cranked handle now absent.
